MPTA Welcomes Governor’s Proposal to Boost Transportation Funding and Ensure Mobility Options for All
The Michigan Public Transit Association (MPTA) today welcomed a proposal from Governor Gretchen Whitmer that would increase support for Michigan’s local bus systems as part of a $3 billion comprehensive transportation funding deal.
“We applaud Governor Whitmer’s proposal to improve our state’s transportation infrastructure, including public transit,” said MPTA Executive Director John Dulmes. “This plan not only addresses the immediate funding crisis faced by local bus systems but also helps pave the way for more stable services and the development of new transit initiatives in our state to meet growing demands. We encourage the Governor and Legislature to redouble their efforts toward funding solutions for our entire transportation system.”
Groups representing Michigan’s local bus systems have raised alarms about a funding crisis as state support for public transit is at its lowest-ever share and declining further. The groups estimate that fully funded bus support would require about $200 million annually in additional funding, which could come from a variety of sources.
To educate policymakers on the challenges and potential solutions, the groups will host a Public Transportation Funding Forum on February 13 and a Transit Legislative Day on March 12.
The Michigan Public Transit Association (MPTA) was established in 1974 and represents over 60 transit providers across Michigan. This includes both public transit agencies and specialized service companies utilizing a variety of vehicles, including bus, van, and ferry service.
